Renaissance Visions: Myth and Art
University Readers
by Dr. Patrick Hunt
University Readers
In Renaissance Visions, Patrick Hunt explores the extensive background and legend surrounding twelve favorite works of Renaissance art, such as Botticelli's Birth of Venus and Caravaggio's Narcissus. Professor Hunt forges vivid interpretations of these classic representations of Greek and Roman myth, taking into account the ambiguity of the original stories and the subsequent variety of perspectives on their meaning. In conversational prose that invites the reader to delve into the book, Professor Hunt transports the reader into a historical era devoted to beauty and myth.

Patrick Hunt has taught in the Humanities program at Stanford University since 1994. He is the author of many articles on the intersection of mythology, archaeology, ancient science, and art history. He has been a featured scholar on the History Channel in various episodes, and his Hannibal research was featured in ARCHAEOLOGY magazine in January 2007. He directed the Stanford Alpine Archaeology Project and currently directs the National Geographic Society Hannibal Expedition (2007-2008).
